On Our Third Trip To The Hospital

That's right friends.

We're in the hospital, again. But I thought you went home? We did! But why are you back? I don't know!!!

Actually, we do know. Our sweet Nora somehow stumbled upon a fever, to which the on-call nurse for our Pediatrician said we're going to the E.R. - end of story.

Except it wasn't the end of the story, no! That's just the prologue, we get to the E.R. expecting another terrible six-hour night like our last visit with Phoebe. We were wrong, but not for the better.

Early estimates are that we'll be here for at least 48 hours. Initial blood and spinal tests were clean, but more forthcoming.

I love bulleted lists. Please be in prayer for us not to:
  1. lose it.
  2. go completely ape s%@# nuts about being back in the hospital for the third time in six weeks.
  3. go at each others throats due to sleeplessness and fatigue
  4. suffer soul-death upon sleeping on these human-rights violating converta-chairs the hospital pretends are beds
  5. lose sight and focus on Christ our Savior, Protector, Deliverer, and Healer
More later, I hope.

On The Mend

Woah!

Last update, I was Lucy in the Sky with Morphine, Sarah was flipping out, we were thinking our little rendezvous at St. Vincent's was just going to take us over the weekend. WRONG!

Fast forward to today.

First, praise the Lord of Hosts. He is so GOOD. I really don't have a good idea of how many people were praying for me, but I think it was at least a hundred. How that makes me feel is just how incredibly tiny my love for Him is, and how, even in my most inspired, glorious awareness I will not have a tiny fraction of understanding His love for me. Amazing.

Not only was prayer instrumental to my recovery, His Word spoke to me in ways it never has. Sarah and I have since talked about how this was one of the most arduous struggles of our lives, but in very different ways. There was an unprecedented emotional challenge for Sarah, of which He delivered her from fully.

But for myself, the physical torment of pain was in amounts and at such degrees that I have never experienced. There were several occasions throughout our trial where the only thing that would easy my agony was His Word. Amazing! Praise God, His Spirit in me thought to call to her to read his Word to me in the midst of the pain. I have since said it was like chilled water on my burning body. No matter what she read, the promises of His word soothed me, dulled the pain, and allowed me to sleep.

So, as you can tell, this has been a huge experience for our family. Like Sarah said on her blog, we're still processing everything, but we have so much to be thankful for right now. We are praying that the Lord install permanent markers (as we've been studying) in our lives as proof of His work in that time.

Now I'm going to post a series of pictures that chronicle our journey. Enjoy!

8/23/08 5:51 AM - This is what started it all. It almost looks like I'm puffing my cheek out -- but I'm not.

8/23/08 7:32 AM - At the ER, by now we're expecting maybe an overnight visit. Ah, to be young and naive.

8/23/08 9:14 AM - This could take a while? Now is when Dr. Doom decided to try and pop my face abscess like a zit. Gee Jolly Thanks Doc!

8/23/08 11:10 AM - You can probably see tears from what that monster did to me. Notice the new swelling under the eye. (Should'a seen the other guy!)

8/23/08 2:21 PM - Proof of some of the worst pain of the whole experience. Dr. LeJeun (not Dr. Doom, strangely) performed a "IND", Irrigation and Drainage procedure. Basically he cut an incision into my nostril down into the abscess behind my upper lip. No anesthesia! What the heck!

8/23/08 5:37 PM - Heeeey! Beef stroganoff! With food this good, who cares about the human rights violations these doctors perform! Forgetaboutit!

8/24/08 7:03 PM - By the next night, we're starting to become painfully (no pun intended) aware that we're going to be there for a while. Mops sends a drop-ship of supplies the next day, The Woodals delivered a slam dunk PB&J sandwich for my beloved and the Jordans bolster the troops with some DVD's and a fantastic puzzle book.

8/25/08 4:30 PM - The only real setback of the stay was after a third IND procedure we finally used anesthesia (!!!) which I had never experienced. The result was severely weakened lungs that were about 1/8th of normal capacity. The flip side? Darth Vader noises! Tshhheeeee cuuuhh.

8/26/08 6:37 PM - I've never done drugs. But if I did, I think it would look like this. So intense! That's me using my "inspiromater" which helped me track the progress of getting my lungs back into shape. It took almost three days before we saw any real progress. "Duuuude, you have to hold it in after you inhale!!"

8/27/08 9:05 AM - Lordy Mercy. We've been cleared to go home, they've taken all the plugs and cords off of me, and I'm a free man. I haven't shaved in a week and look like some kind of Christian Campus Recruiter for some reason.

Well there you have it. Surely a week we'll not soon forget. One major casualty of the whole thing was that we were due for vacation with my family right as I got ill. We missed out on a relaxing week at the beach, and some much needed family time. Obviously the Lord had other plans, and we are, through him, better because of it. I now excitedly wait to see how He will fill in the needs that the vacation was going to fill.
